An ultrasound of the pelvis is performed as part of a full female check up.
The ultrasound may be used to examine the uterus ( womb ), ovaries and adnexae.
Fibroids, ovarian cysts and pregnancies may be discovered during an ultrasound examination.
There are 2 ways of performing a pelvic ultrasound- via the abdomen or transvaginally. The abdominal method is preferred for pregnancy and for women who are not sexually active. Transvaginal ultrasounds give better views for the ovaries and adnexae.
