IUCD : Intrauterine contraceptive Device
An IUCD is an ideal form of contraception for women who have no immediate desire for fertility, most typically after having 1 or more children.
It is best inserted during or just after the period is over for comfort and to avoid inadvertent insertion during a viable pregnancy.
The IUCD is completely reversible and fertility can resume immediately.
There are 2 types of IUCDs used – the copper T and the Mirena.
The copper T IUCD lasts about 3 years and does not release any hormones. However periods may become slightly more painful and heavier in some women.
The Mirena IUCD lasts 5 years, and will release small amounts of hormone which works to reduce the period. Some women may stop having periods.
